Service Flags.
This artifact is a World War 1 service flag. This item was introduced into the United States in 1917 (around the time they went into war) by Captain Robert L Quissner. The purpose of the service flag was to notify people of how many boys this household has serving in the armed forces currently. The flag consisted of a white field, a red border, and a blue star for each family member serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.
Gas Warfare
This artifact consists of both French and German warfare in World War 1. With this artifact you're able to see the same two items, gas mask and carrier, but from two different sides of the war. The gas mask and carrier were important within WWI because chemical warfare was introduced around this time (1914), both France and Germany began using tear gas against each other within the war. These items helped protect their eyes (etc.) against this non-lethal gas.
Joseph Garneau Weld
This artifact is some items owned by St. Louisan Joseph Garneau Weld. St. Louisan Joseph Garneau Weld was an ambulance driver for the French army starting in Oct.1916. His role was basically the same as an ambulance driver today but a little more intense since of course this was during the war. This job was mainly for boys younger than the age of 18 thus allowing them to still participate in the war. Some of Garneau’s items included (in this artifact) is his task mask carrier and hate belt. The gas mask carrier was, of course, used to carry his gas mask, the hate belt was a belt (used as souvineers by the soldiers) that consisted of buttons from an allied soldier they'd killed.
Music sheet
This artifact is song from the time of World War 1. It is entitled “The Battle Song Of Liberty” and was written by Jack Yellen and composed by F.E. Bigelow in 1917. This song was played within the time of WWI to spread hope and lighten the depressing atmosphere.
